About Us

Manhattan Country Club was founded in 1916.  Four men had a vision to create a 9-hole course and Country Club.  At the time the men could be found playing golf in a hay field, where the airport now stands, using tomato cans for holes.  The original clubhouse was constructed on 75 acres of land purchased at $35 per acre.  A 9-hole course was soon to follow.  The club started out with a membership of 100 people and was only the 6th Country Club to be formed in Kansas.  In 1923, 9 more holes were constructed with the purchase of 75 more acres of land.  At the time, it was one of the only 18-hole courses in Kansas and was soon to be considered one of the best in the state. Manhattan Country Club continued to prosper until disaster struck in December 1963.  The Club was ravaged by fire and the entire Clubhouse was considered a loss.  The Club was rebuilt a little more than a year later.  Four years after the club was rebuilt, the unthinkable happened.  The Club was again destroyed by fire on February 21, 1969.  Once again, the Clubhouse was soon rebuilt.

The Clubhouse was remodeled in the early 1990's and in 1999, the bathrooms were made handicap accessible and main office was expanded to meet the growing business needs of the Club.  In 2008, the Club completed a $4.1 million dollar expansion and renovation project.  The project included a complete overhaul of the existing building as well as new underground cart storage, new golf shop, new casual restaurant and bar with a deck overlooking the golf course, and new golf maintenance facility.

Today Manhattan Country Club continues to thrive.  The Club currently has more than 400 members and continues to grow day-by-day.  The facilities include an 18-hole, 175 acre golf course; practice greens; driving range; swimming pool constructed in 1997; casual restaurant and lounge; banquet rooms that accommodate up to 300 people; state of the art conference room; and full service formal dining room.

The Club is member-owned and operated, controlled by a Board of Directors who are appointed to three-year terms.  The Board of Directors are responsible to the membership for their actions.  It is the members who keep the Club operating with their dues and assessments paid on a monthly basis.  Member classification is based on age, marital status, and the desired use of facilities or Clubhouse.
